Review
Summary |
With the proliferation of fad diets in recent years, it can be difficult to determine which foods are the most nutritious and which to avoid. In fact, it can seem as though every few month’s conventional wisdom is turned on its head, with the foods we were once warned to avoid being touted as the secret to lasting weight loss. Of course, there is no clearer example of this ambivalence than the low carb vs. low fat debate.
Understanding Nutrition is an attempt to “lay down the law” about how different foods contribute to our overall wellbeing, and how we should use this knowledge to design the optimal program for our own individual needs.

 | Concept |
|
Understanding Nutrition is an introductory textbook for college and university nutrition courses. An educational tool, it also includes “interactive study aids,” such as a CD-ROM. In addition to the expected discussions on food groups, vitamins and minerals, this book also contains information on some alternative therapies so that students are equipped with a full range of information.
Some sample topics include gene expression, nutriceuticals, and phytochemicals. This new addition also provides an overview of controversial topics. It also includes supplementary resources, such as the government’s dietary guidelines for Americans for 2005.
The CD-ROM includes tools for calculating daily caloric intake, dietary allowances, and goal percentages.

 | Design |
|
This book is designed to be used as a resource in the context of a course led by an instructor. However, some dieters may find it helpful for learning the basics of nutrition and for learning about some of the newer approaches to weight loss and health. Some may also find it beneficial to read unbiased studies on some of the latest claims, such as low carb dieting. This is particularly valuable since manufacturers of nutritional products can often offer conflicting information.
That said, it is important to keep in mind that this text is not intended to be used as a diet manual. Because it is not targeted at a commercial audience, readers who have not studied nutrition may find it a bit dense and heavy on unfamiliar terminology.

 | Diet Lifestyle |
|
Individuals who would like to lose weight, but are unfamiliar with the basics of nutrition may certainly benefit from reading a book or taking a class that is aimed at the average person rather than scientists or nutritionists-in-training. While having a strong knowledge base can help dieters to make smarter choices, many still find themselves confronted with cravings that are difficult to resist. In addition, certain hormonal changes and genetic predispositions can make weight loss challenging in spite of all best efforts.
For this reason, dieters may want to consider a nutritional supplement that contains both an advanced appetite suppressant with an effective fat burner. Hoodia Gordonii has been shown to help dieters significantly reduce their total calorie intake, while Advantra-Z raises the metabolism to increase fat burning capability.

 | Final Thoughts |
|
When it comes to health, every individual can benefit from more information. With all of the conflicting claims flying around in the media, a resource like Understanding Nutrition may be a good resource for plain facts.
That said it is not intended for a general audience, which may make it difficult for the average person to find the information they need, and sometimes all the nutritional knowledge in the world doesn’t help when a craving hits. A high-quality herbal supplement can help dieters to regain control over their appetite so that they can make smart choices.
