Summary |
According to Monica Reinagel, author of The Inflammation-Free Diet Plan, inflammation has been revealed as the cause of such ailments as hay fever, depression, heart disease and diabetes. What’s more, scientists are now beginning to see links between seemingly unrelated conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and heart attacks, and again, inflammation is at the root. Even dermatologists are now starting to believe that it may be one of the causes of skin aging.
Reinagel has had a great deal of experience writing about health issues. She is the former editorial director of the Health Sciences Institute, and is currently the managing editor of Academy of Environmental Medicine's weekly Medical Digest. A professionally-trained chef, she designed the recipes for this and other health-related books.
Although this book makes a number of fascinating connections between inflammation and a variety of ailments, those who are strictly focused on shedding pounds may find this book a bit overwhelming and at the same time inefficient.

 | Concept |
|
The Inflammation-Free Diet is based on the IF Rating System, which is used to indicate which foods are inflammatory and which are anti-inflammatory. Those with a positive rating are anti-inflammatory, while those with a negative rating are inflammatory, and the higher the number, the greater the effect. The formulas for the ratings are based on 20 different factors, including glycemic index and the amount and type of fat it contains.
In order to create a diet that is less likely to exacerbate systemic inflammation, dieters simply add the numbers corresponding to each food, keeping the total at or below their target, which is discussed in the book.

 | Design |
|
Unlike other factors, such as calories, fat, sodium and cholesterol, it is impossible to determine the IF Rating of the foods we eat. This book is designed to help consumers to calculate these numbers for themselves and make more informed decisions. The author emphasizes that foods with a negative rating are not necessarily bad, but they should be balanced by anti-inflammatory foods, and eaten in moderation.
The Inflammation-Free Diet incorporates some of the concepts introduced by other diets, such as the importance of reducing simple carbohydrates and choosing healthy fats. In this sense, the IF Rating System may help dieters to make smarter choices, but the book does not specifically address weight loss.

 | Diet Lifestyle |
|
Although this book may help dieters to identify foods that should be eaten in moderation, it does offer advice on how to counter cravings. For many of us, even when we are armed with knowledge of all of the latest research on nutrition, we still have a difficult time limiting our intake when faced with oversized portions. In these situations, an herbal supplement containing an advanced ingredient like Hoodia may help to give dieters more control so that they can make better choices.
The book is also somewhat inadequate at addressing other possible causes of weight gain, such as hormones and heredity. Again, the additional support of a supplement may be required.
|
 | Positives |
|
• Does not eliminate any one food or group
• Provides lists of foods and their IF Ratings for easy reference
|
 | Negatives |
|
• Does not address the problem of cravings
• Does not specifically address weight loss
|
 | Final Thoughts |
|
The Inflammation-Free Diet attempts to address an important factor that is not often addressed. It also includes a guide for identifying anti-inflammatory foods. Although this is quite helpful, Reinagel’s scale incorporates a number of factors that are common to other diets, such as avoiding simple carbohydrates and opting for heart-healthy fats like olive oil over saturated fat.
As different diets come in and out of vogue, it becomes more and more apparent that appetite control is one of the only ways for dieters to take charge and make smart choices. Those who are trying to lose weight and eat right should consider a supplement containing Hoodia, as well as additional fat-burners and antioxidants for maximum effectiveness.
