Review
Summary |
Dieting For Dummies is one of many books in the “dummies” series. This one was written by Jane Kirby RD, who is a registered dietitian, as well as a member of The American Dietetic Association, who Jane Kirby RD represents in this book. In an industry where diet books abound we will thoroughly review the concepts used in this book to see if it can deliver results to readers, in terms of viable weight loss.
|
 | Concept |
|
This book tries to pack a lot of information into 281 pages. It seeks to provide readers with the big picture in terms of weight loss and supply them with basic nutrition and exercise information. The weight loss concept used in this book is that readers “need to alter the amount of calories stored and burned”, thereby creating weight loss. This is not a new concept, but one put forth by many diet plans. It is the “how” of creating the effect that many plans differ on and the problem most dieters have problems with.

 | Design |
|
This author has laid out this book in such as way as to give readers a step-by-step introduction into the world of weight loss. The chapters are arranged into sections with titles, such as “so you wanna lose weight”, “getting over overeating”, “formulating a plan for healthful eating”, “shopping, cooking and eating out”, “enlisting outside help” and “special circumstances”.
The author also tries to provide readers with tools so they can ascertain what their relationship with food is, which can be very valuable information for some readers to be able to access. She talks about the huge potions offered in some restaurants and the effect that has on eating habits and what she calls the “conspiracy to consumer”, which is a fairly common theme thorough out this text. This concept basically means that there are elements with our culture which are conspiring to make us eat more not less. She offers readers tools to combat this issue in their everyday life.
We were glad to see that she outlines avenues for readers to tailor make a diet plan which will “suit their needs”, as well as giving them practical advice, such as: eat lots of vegetables and do not skip meals. It also provides information on the dieting basics, cooking, shopping and eating out; may areas new dieters may have problems with.
The author also supply’s information on different weight loss plans and products currently available on the market and her take on their viability in terms of creating effective weight loss in users. She also offers information about alternatives, such as surgery and therapy as tools for some individuals, to help them lose weight.
|
 | Lifestyle |
|
The author of this book stresses that weigh loss is augmented through “getting moving”; which basically means that exercise is an important part of the concepts used in this book. She is a
big proponent of walking and suggests walking for as much as an hour a day. Research suggests that exercise combined with a good diet is an effective method of creating weight loss. We were very glad to see exercise information and resources provided in this book.

 | Final Thoughts |
|
Dieting For Dummies may well provide readers with some information they may need to help them create a weight loss plan; although this book may not be the best match for readers who are not dieting or nutritional novices. These individuals may want to look for a plan which gives more detailed information on certain dieting aspects. They may also want to take a look at holistic nutritional supplements, such as Advantra Z to help increase fat burning ability, as well as boost their metabolism.
Dieting For Dummies is available on book sellers sites for around $14.99. A free trial is not offered.
