Summary |
There are a number of fad diets, diet books and videos and methods of weight loss currently available for consumers interested in a new diet plan – and one that may actually work. Many people claim to have tried “everything” in order to lose weight, and companies often take advantage of this by constantly offering new products and methods for dieters to try, claiming that they have the answers.
One method of weight loss that many people try is colonics. Apparently, “colon-cleansing” is an appealing way to lose weight for these people. We will take a closer look at this method to see how effective it may be as an aid to actual weight loss.
 | Concept |
The method is based on the idea of “the importance of cleansing the body” and keeping it clean; the build up of toxins is thought to lead to disease, including obesity, and many diets promote cleansing and detoxing as ways to help balance the systems in the body. Many believe that the intestines build up toxins, and cleansing this particular organ will help keep the body running efficiently; however science often claims otherwise.

 | Concept In Focus |
Colonics is, as mentioned, “cleansing the colon”. Essentially, the large intestine is “washed out”, ridding it of stagnant materials.
Those choosing this method must understand that the process is not the most comfortable. A plastic tube is inserted into the rectum, and the colon is filled with water during the procedure. Once it has been filled, the water and its contents are drained through a second tube. The procedure is said to help to remove bacteria, fecal matter and all other “toxins” from the intestines, and takes approximately 45 minutes.
Consumers interested in this procedure can by home kits to try on their own or they can choose to go to a colon therapist. It is a procedure that is said to work best when done on a regular basis, about every six weeks, and is often used in conjunction with nutritional supplements.
Other ailments that this procedure is meant to aid in are sinus problems, asthma, arthritis, gas and bloating and digestive problems. Be advised that risks include tearing the rectal lining, depletion of minerals in the body, increased likelihood of spreading infections and upsetting chemical balances in the body.

 | Diet Lifestyle |
For those interested in an alternative approach to weight loss, a procedure such as this may be desirable. The build-up of toxins is thought to be the cause of many health problems, from cancers to symptoms of aging, and a number of products and programs exist to try to reduce the damage. Cleansing has become popular, and many people have claimed to benefit from colonics – not only for weight loss, “but for feeling lighter and more energetic”.
As discussed, however, the procedure may be uncomfortable and there are risks involved with it. Those interested should consult a doctor prior to beginning treatment and make sure that they are well aware of all that is involved in colonics. Consumers not interested in undergoing a potentially painful procedure may want to look for modern dietary supplements to aid in weight loss, and combine them with a balanced diet and regular exercise.
 | Positives |
• Procedure could be done at home
 | Negatives |
• Procedure can be uncomfortable
• Several serious side effects associated with colonics
• Very little research to back up claims of effectiveness on weight loss
 | Final Thoughts |
As we have seen and discussed, colonics is not exactly the most pleasant method of weight loss available. While some people may assert that it is less painful than exercise, the majority would have to agree that the procedure itself is uncomfortable. Some people have claimed to feel more energetic after undergoing colon-cleansing procedures, though, as mentioned; there is no substantial evidence to support claims of weight loss. Mainly it appears to be a method for those wishing to “cleanse their bodies”.
For those concerned more with actual weight loss, use of a daily oral supplement containing and active fat burner may be desirable. When combined with a healthy balanced diet and regular exercise, results are most profound; in many cases, weight loss can lead to healthier lives and is also known to reduce the likelihood of disease.
